Benefits and Paid Time Off

Your employee benefits coverage will not change during your furlough period. Your benefits will continue according to your elections on file. Premium contributions for health & welfare benefits will continue to be deducted from your biweekly paycheck. Pay-related benefits, such as Pension Plan and Investment Plan Contributions, will be reduced as a result of the reduced work schedule.

Because you have experienced a significant change in your regular work hours, you qualify to make changes to your benefit elections. To make a change, please send a message through “Contact Us” on My Total Rewards or by calling the ABC Co Benefits Network at 800-123-4567. You have 90 days from the date of your furlough to make a change.

Important Notes

Payroll Deductions — If your paycheck does not cover your current deductions, your share of the costs will build in arrears and will be deducted from your paychecks (when you return to full-time work), or from other compensation such as GoalSharing or vacation payments.

Qualified Status Changes — Because you have experienced a significant change in your regular work hours, you may make changes to your benefit elections. To make a change, please send a message through “Contact Us” on My Total Rewards or by calling the ABC Co Benefits Network.

You have 90 days from the date of a qualifying status change to make an election change. Your election change must correspond to the event that caused the status change. For example, the significant change in your regular work hours means that you may adjust any FSA contributions that you make. You may also reduce or drop optional coverages – for example, you could reduce or drop Voluntary AD&D or GUL coverage for yourself or your dependents.

Paid Time Off (Vacation, Holiday, and Personal Time Paid for A&Ts)

Vacation will not be impacted while you are on furlough as a result of the New York Shared Work Program. For example, if you have 15 vacation days in 2020, that number will remain the same. Unused vacation time for nonexempt employees will follow the normal year-end payout process.

If you use vacation days while on furlough, the number of days you actually use depends on the number of worked days you have in that furlough week. So this could be either 2, 3 or 4 days for the “full week” off. Pay is still reduced, and you should still file for unemployment compensation for the furloughed day(s) under the Shared Work Program. Note that each paid vacation day does count as a “work day” in the eyes of unemployment and must be included in the number of days worked for reporting purposes. For workweeks with a holiday, A&T employees will want to adjust their furlough schedule for the week to include the holiday as part of “days worked.” For example, the Independence Day holiday is observed on Friday, July 3. If your normal furlough schedule is Monday through Thursday, you will want to change your schedule for that week to Tuesday through Friday so it includes the paid holiday time off.
